1.  School starts everyday at 8:20 am and students are allowed on campus at 8 am.

2.  Students will have lunch at school everyday.  Click here for a copy of our 2018-19 Bell Schedule.

3.  Every year, teachers strive to put together balanced classrooms with student needs in mind.  They have spent countless hours and have taken many factors into consideration when placing your student into their class this year.  It takes time for students and teachers to build relationships and get to know one another in order to build a strong culture for learning.  Please allow time for everyone to settle in. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Jones (julie_jones@nvusd.org).  Students’ classroom placement will be posted by the front office on Tuesday, August 14th after 4 pm.

4.  All supplies that students need in order to be successful this year will be provided for them.  If you have donations you would like to make to the school or your child’s classroom please check with your child’s teacher.  Donations may be dropped off in the front office or to your child’s teacher.

5.  School gets out at 2:35 pm on regular school days and 1:10 pm on Wednesdays, except the first three days of school (August 15-17th) when students are released at 1:10 each day.

Are you interested in joining the Vichy Parent Club Board?  Nominations are now being accepted in the office.  You can nominate someone you think would be a good fit in one of the roles (detailed below), or you can absolutely nominate yourself!  All positions are available, see below for brief descriptions:

President: This person leads the Parent Club for a term of two years, by attending all Parent Club meetings of the board and the parent body. The President also upholds the bylaws, leads all meetings of the Parent Club, and is a leader of the school's parental community. While this position does not require previous board experience, given the depth of our parent involvement in the Parent Club, knowledge of the board and its duties is a plus. This position is geared to an organized person that likes to be involved in decision making and leadership.

Vice President: Overall, this person helps the President do their job. More specifically and almost more importantly, the Vice President is responsible for all of the marketing and communications for the Parent Club. This includes fundraising efforts, school events, important news, and the development of new programs and implementation. The vice President acts as the liaison with the parent body and the board. This is an excellent position for someone that's tech savvy, creative and outgoing.

Secretary: The Secretary is responsible for documenting, distributing and maintaining VPC Board meeting agendas and minutes along with the General VPC meeting agendas and minutes. The Secretary helps to maintain the overall flow of the meetings, making sure topic items have not been missed.  This is a great position for someone looking to dip into the board.

Treasurer: The Treasurer oversees the financial aspect and well being of the Parent Club. The Treasurer is responsible for the intake of monies, paying owed debts, categorizing and recording all transactions and deposits. The Treasurer is tasked with helping the Parent Club adhere to its budget and help make necessary adjustments for the following year.  Obviously, someone who knows a thing about dollars and cents is ideal here.

Financial Secretary: The Financial Secretary acts as a general administrative assistant to the Treasurer, including receipt of all monies, bank account deposits, dealing with correspondence and other duties as directed by the Treasurer.  Another great position for someone new to the board that wants to be involved with how our money is spent.

Room Parent Coordinator: The head room parents act as the liaison between the Parent Board and room parents, coordinate and distribute information to room parents, is in charge of welcoming to the club new Vichy parents, contact parents who are interested in being a room parent for that particular class, organize the teacher appreciation luncheon, and assist in other duties to support the endeavors of the Parent Board.  This is an important position, which is why there are two, see below.

Co - Room Parent Coordinator: This position helps coordinate along side the head room parent in the communication with the teachers and the room parents.

Fundraising Officer: Coordinates overall fundraising activities of the Vichy Parent Club. This person works with the Jog-A-Thon and Auction Chairs for coordinating these events. Coordinates with fundraising committees to coordinate spirit sales, dine and donate, etc.  This is a very fun and rewarding position.

Should you want more information regarding any of the positions, please feel free to email all@vichyboard.com.

Last, nominations will close on May 31st at 3:00 p.m.  Do not delay and consider joining the fun!

Thanks,

Daralyn Christensen

Vice President, Vichy Board

The Parent Club Board would like to make the Fundraising Officer position more dynamic in order to keep up with the scope and magnitude of our efforts.  Therefore, the board would like to split this position in three ways: an Auction Chair, a Jogathon Chair, and a General Fundraising Officer.  These roles will work together, while being able to tackle their individually larger events in a committee format.  The General Fundraising Officer will handle Dine and Donate, shopvichy.com, Spirit Wear and other smaller fundraising efforts throughout the year.

This split will be formally adopted into our bylaws in two weeks, should it not have any disapproval from the parent membership.  If you have comments or would like to know more about this split, please email the board at all@vichyboard.com.

Thank you for all of your support!

Daralyn Christensen

Julie Jones, current assistant principal at Harvest Middle SchoolJulie Jones, has been named principal of Vichy Elementary School in Napa, starting July 1, 2018. Jones’ appointment was approved at last night’s meeting of the NVUSD Board of Education.

Jones succeeds Chris Byrne, who is retiring in June after five years as principal.

“Julie Jones is a strong administrator who works well with a variety of students and families,” said Superintendent Patrick Sweeney. “She has strong instructional skills and is committed to continuing the culture of community and learning at Vichy Elementary.”

Jones has master’s degrees in educational leadership and education, reading and literacy. At NVUSD, she spent 25 years teaching at Shearer Elementary, Alta Heights Elementary and Harvest Middle School before being named assistant principal at Harvest Middle School in 2015. She was a key member of the team that brought the International Baccalaureate magnet program to Harvest, and took the lead in opening NVUSD’s first middle school Wellness Center there in 2015.

“I am looking forward to returning to my elementary roots and working with the teachers  and community members to support the students of Vichy," Jones said.

As principal, Jones will be responsible for the educational curriculum, staff and budget management, counseling and guidance, discipline, school activities, professional development for teachers, testing and community relations at Vichy, which has 349 students..

Jones lives in Napa with her husband of 25 years.  Together, they raised two grown sons, Alex and Zach,  both of whom are NVUSD graduates.

Each spring, we update our Local Control Accountability Plan, which describes how we’re going to meet our educational goals with the funding available to us.

One part of that plan is an assessment of how well we welcome and take advantage of parent involvement and engagement in our schools. We’d like to hear your feedback and opinions on that topic.

Click here to complete this short survey online in English or Spanish, by May 10. (Paper surveys are provided at the schools and the District office, but we prefer you take the survey online)

Thank you!

Each spring, students in grades 3-8 and high school participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). English language arts/literacy, mathematics, and science tests are included in CAASPP.

For CAASPP testing, students who have the most significant cognitive disabilities, as designated in their active individualized education program, are eligible to take the California Alternative Assessments (CAAs).

The testing window opens April 2 for NVUSD students. The actual testing period within that window varies at each school.

This year, your child will take the following test(s), depending on his or her grade level:

  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in English language arts/literacy (grades 3-8 and grade 11)
  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in mathematics (grades 3-8 and grade 11)
  • California is in the process of implementing the California Next Generation Science Standards. As part of that implementation, students in grades 5, 5, 8, and high school will try out a new test called the California Science Test, or CAST.

These tests measure what your child knows and is able to do. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support he or she needs to be successful in school.

For more information about tests, results, preparation, and the Alternative Assessments, visit the NVUSD Student Testing webpage.

For information on specific dates and times when your child will take the test in each subject, please contact your child's teacher or the school office.

Spring Break is March 26-30.

Please don't miss school days before or after the break.

DOES ATTENDANCE MATTER, REALLY?
Short answer: Yes. Attendance matters.

It matters to your STUDENT
* Children who miss 20 or more days of school in kindergarten through third grade do poorly in school, and have future problems with truancy, delinquency and substance abuse, and are more likely to drop out of school.
* For low-income students in urban areas, each additional day absent from school in elementary grades is associated with a 7% lower probability of graduating from high school.
* Truancy is a 97% predictor of first-time drug use. The greater the number of truant days, the greater the use.
This information is from the California Dept of Education.

It matters to your SCHOOL
At NVUSD, the average student is absent 7 days each school year. If we can reduce that to an average of 5 days, it would save the District $1.5 million in lost funding from the state. That amount represents nearly half of NVUSD's budget reductions for 2018-2019. Please plan family vacations to correspond to school breaks.
Thank you!

Both state and federal law require all public schools to prepare and distribute a School Accountability Report Card (SARC) to provide parents and the community with important information about each public school including demographic data; test results; class sizes; teacher and staff information; curriculum and instruction descriptions; parent involvement opportunities, “adequate yearly progress” of students in achieving state academic achievement standards; Title 1 Program Improvement, graduation rates at the secondary level; and , the extent to which “highly qualified” teachers are teaching core academic subjects.

SARCs are always published on year following the data gathering.  Therefore, SARCs published in 2017-18 are now available for the 2016-17 school year.  SARCs are posted at http://www.nvusd.org/sarcpage. This link is also available on our home page. Hard copies are also available at each school site upon request.  Please contact your school office to obtain a copy.

Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after the winter holiday break as families squeeze in a few more vacation days.

It’s time to break that cycle. We know that just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school.

Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning, right up until each break starts and the first day back. You can help us convey that message. This holiday season, give your children the gift of an education and the habit of attendance.

Four updates:

  • Food service this week
  • The planned non-student day on Friday, Oct. 27
  • Elementary parent conferences
  • Wednesday’s Safety and Security Parent meeting

We want to clarify that school breakfast and lunch are not free to all students this week. We realize that many families have had a change in housing or income status due to the fires, and we will provide breakfast and lunch to those students while we work to get the proper paperwork completed.

Secondly, as planned, there will be no school for students on Friday, Oct. 27. We are working with our teachers on options for recovering student learning lost during the fire emergency. We will share those plans as soon as they are available.

Next, if your student is in elementary school, you will hear directly from the school about rescheduling your parent conference. The intent is to complete conferences before Thanksgiving break.

Finally, we will reschedule the Safety and Security Parent meeting that was scheduled for this Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the District Auditorium. Please watch for the new date.

Thank you, and welcome back to school!

Here's why:

  • We committed to making attendance decisions based on air quality, and the forecast for the week continues to include periods in the red (unhealthy) and purple (very unhealthy) zones.
  • There is just too much variability in air quality to be confident for an entire school day.

We are committed to getting students back in school as quickly as possible, but only when the air quality situation is more reliably orange (unhealthy for sensitive groups) or better.

NVUSD staff will get additional information through their usual communication channels.

For students with asthma

If your student has asthma but does not have an inhaler at school and you want to send one,  please download the NVUSD medication form and ask your health care provider (doctor) to complete and sign it. Return it to your school office with your student's inhaler.

Dear Vichy,

Jogathon will be postponed, so our wonderful community has time to heal, and our beautiful children have an opportunity to come together and find relief in each other and their teachers at Vichy Elementry.

I pray for each of your wellness and strength in this time.

If there is anything standing in your way of getting your child to school every day, on time, the best way that we can fully support your child is through communication. Please don’t hesitate to contact any member of the school staff. Come in to talk with us, set up an appointment, call, or email at any time. Thank you for your efforts in all that you do as parents to help your child succeed!

WELCOME to Girls on the Run Napa & Solano! We look forward to your participation in Girls on the Run and hope that you are going to have as much fun as we are! A few things for you to consider bringing each day:

  • Always bring properly fitted athletic shoes (P.E.) to workout in. Don’t forget to bring socks too, because without them you might get blisters.
  • Please wear clothes appropriate for running and playing. Shorts and a T-shirt work best. If it is really hot, wear light colored, loose-fitting clothing. If it is very cold, layering clothes works best – wear an undershirt with a sweatshirt and/or sweat pants. If the weather is yucky we will not run outside, but we will still get together.
  • Always bring a full water bottle.
  • Always come equipped with a be-yourself kind of attitude. Everyone is valued, whether they run fast or not. Even though running and walking are fun, being part of Girls on the Run is even more fun. Everyone is important, whether you help give out healthy snacks or you cheer on another person.

The first day of Girls on the Run is September 12th with your amazing volunteer life coaches, Strong Shari, Harmonious Heather & Amazing Antonia. We will meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:45-4:00 at Vichy Elementary in the grass area in front of the school. We will have a brief parent meeting the first day after Girls on the Run to answer questions and discuss expectations. Please remember:

  • Bring a photo ID to help our volunteers release your girl safely (until they know you).
  • Make sure you have shared all the names of the authorized persons for pick up with the Girls on the Run Napa & Solano office (707-637-8909). If you need to add one, please try for at least 24 hours notice so we have time to share with the volunteers.
  • Please know that we want GOTR to be a positive experience for everyone and that we want girls to participate so they receive the full benefit. Let us know if she is scheduled to miss more than 6 sessions. We can put her on the wait list for the fall program and offer her spot to another girl who has the time to participate.
  • We ask that all families make an effort to pickup your girl within 10 minutes of our session end so our volunteers can be with their families or go back to work.

All groups will run, walk, skip, leap or cartwheel all the way to the finish line of the Girls on the Run 5K on Saturday, November 11th at Napa Valley College and complete a community impact project. If you have any questions, please talk with your volunteer coach or call us at 707-637-8909.

Worldwide, nationally and locally, humans are being challenged by forces of nature: fires, hurricanes, earthquakes and more. Close to home, we know the anxiety and uncertainty people feel when their world is changed overnight, such as the earthquake of Aug. 24, 2014. So our empathy for those in Texas, Florida, Mexico and other places is real and heartfelt.

Many in our community are uncertain and anxious due to the announced changes in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.

Our Board of Trustees, as well as the County Supervisors and municipal councils, resolved in April 2017: “We aspire to be a model for inclusion and equity for all populations, including immigrants, refugees, and other newcomers and are committed to supporting the ongoing inclusion and long-term economic and social integration of newcomers, and to demonstrate values of unity and acceptance.”

We will continue to follow the policies put in place nationally, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, until new policies or laws are enacted, and remain committed to our vision of preparing all of our community’s children for college and careers in the 21st century.

Napa County Public Health is offering free seasonal flu vaccine shots to anyone over 3 years of age

The spray version of the vaccine is not available this year, but the flu shot is still the safest and most effective way to avoid getting the flu. In addition to protecting yourself from getting sick, the vaccine can prevent you from spreading the flu to your family and other people who are more likely to have severe illness.

See the attached schedule for dates and locations.

Please remember to pick up a supply list from your child's classroom, and consider using www.shopvichy.com for all of your back-to-school purchases.  If you use Amazon, make sure you are getting there by typing www.shopvichy.com into your browser.  7% of each purchase goes to directly to our school, which last year amounted to nearly $7,000!  Absolutely the easiest way to donate.
