Reading Support

Vichy Elementary implements the NVUSD Adopted Reading Programs - Macmillan/McGraw Hill's: California Treasures and Houghton Mifflin's: A Legacy of Reading. Teachers in Primary grades K-2 use Guided Reading Groups and the Scholastic Program iRead to support all students with the complex task of learning to read. Upper grade classrooms implement Literature Circles to develop fluency and deepen student's comprehension and understanding of more complex materials. Students learn to Make Connections, Predict, Analyze, Infer, Evaluate and Draw Conclusions to engage with literature, integrating higher levels of thinking and to develop their writing in response to literature. Our Parent Club funds a Reading Intervention Instructor who assists students who need greater support to learn to read fluently. Since the 2010-11 school year, we have implemented Scholastic's Systems 44 and Read 180 in 3rd - 5th grade to provide interventions for struggling readers. We are proud of the incredible progress Vichy students make throughout their foundational years at our school!
